History
History of the Complex and Foundation
Beginning in 1988, the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation was created to provide resources and support for the seven schools, one high school and its middle and elementary feeder schools, which formed a K-12 complex in the Pacific Palisades/Brentwood region of Los Angeles. With the Foundation’s assistance, in 1995, the complex applied as a consortium of neighborhood schools and was granted a single Charter by the LAUSD under the Charter Schools Act of 1992. The California Department of Education converted this single multi-campus Charter into seven individually numbered charters effective July 1, 1999. The Charters were later renewed in 2005 for 2005-2010.
The unifying focus of the Palisades Charter Complex is a dynamic but coordinated K-12 curriculum. The charter complex has the ability to share resources, collaborate in innovative teaching methods across grade levels and campuses, sustain continuous parental involvement, and coordinate school calendars and services. In these ways, the charter complex improves learning opportunities for students, challenges teachers with new levels of responsibility for academic programs and expanded professional opportunities, and keeps parents engaged in the education of their children by offering opportunities to be involved in the management and operation of the schools. Thus, the K-12 continuum allows students, educators, and parents to establish and maintain a critical sense of community and involvement with the continuity, stability, and predictability needed to provide academic excellence. Students from the five elementary schools will automatically matriculate to Revere Middle School and Revere students will be assured priority admission to Palisades Charter High.
The Palisades Coordinating Council serves as the forum for discussion, advice, and articulation among the schools on issues of mutual concern. The Coordinating Council is comprised of three representatives from each campus (a parent, an administrator, and a teacher). The charter complex is further assisted in fulfilling its objectives by the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation, which is a non- profit fundraising coalition that provides technical support, funding, and consultation services.
